Celtic Holidays, Halloween, Interesting Stories, Irish Traditions

The Origins of Halloween and Its Traditions

Halloween originated with an ancient Celtic festival called Samhain (pronounced Sah-ween or Sow-in). The Celtic New Year began on November 1. On the last day of the Celtic year, October 31, the Celts believed that ghosts roamed the world that night, causing harm to crops and creating mischief. So on October 31, the Celts dressed in scary costumes, parading around the village in the hopes of scaring away the mischievous spirits.

When Christianity arrived in Ireland, the church named November 1 as All Saints Day to honor saints and martyrs in an attempt replace or over shadow Samhain. Trick-or-treating originated from an All Souls Day tradition. People walked from village to village begging for “soul cakes.” In exchange for the “soul cakes,” a prayer would be said for the giver of the bread. The more bread they gave away the more people they had praying for their souls. In the 1500s, All Saint’s Day becomes All Hallows’ Day, and Samhain had become known as All Hallows’ Evening. Then eventually Hallow Evening became Halloween.

Celtic Owl Pendant by The Irish Jewelry Company

The Celtic Owl

The word “cailleach” in the Scottish-Gaelic means old woman!, Owl in Gaelic is “cauileach-oidhche” , believe it or not it means “night-cockerel” or “white old woman of the night.”  Because the owl was most often associated with the Crone aspect of the Celtic Hag Goddess “Cailleach”. The owl is often a guide to and through the Underworld, a creature of keen sight in darkness, and a silent and swift hunter. Celtic folklore says the wise owl can give you wisdom by helping unmask those who would deceive you or take advantage of you. “Hoo” knew?

Irish Christmas Culture and Customs
Irish Christmas Traditions and Blessings

What are Irish Christmas Traditions?

Like most countries, Ireland has many of it’s own Irish Christmas Traditions.  Ireland’s Irish Christmas Traditions that have survived to modern times are steeped in Irish culture, religious faith and family tradition. Some Irish Christmas Traditions include:

WHAT IS THE CANDLE IN THE WINDOW?

The placing of a candle in the window of a house on Christmas eve is still practiced today. It has many purposes but primarily a candle in the window was a symbol of welcome to Mary and Joseph as they looked for shelter. The a candle in the window also indicated a safe place for priests to perform mass as, during Penal Times this was not allowed. A further element of the tradition is that the candle should be lit by the youngest member of the household and only be extinguished by a girl bearing the name ‘Mary’.

WHAT IS THE LADEN TABLE?

After evening meal on Christmas eve the kitchen table was again set and on it were placed a loaf of bread filled with caraway seeds and raisins, a pitcher of milk and a large lit candle. The door to the house was left unlatched so that Mary and Joseph, or any wandering traveler, could avail of the welcome.

WHAT IS WREN DAY IN IRELAND?

The Wren Boy Procession also known as the Day of the Wren is celebrated on December 26th. During Penal Times there was once a plot in a village against the local soldiers. They were surrounded and were about to be ambushed when a group of wrens pecked on their drums and awakened the soldiers. The plot failed and the wren became known as ‘The Devil’s bird’.

WHY IS ST. STEPHENS DAY CELEBRATED IN IRELAND?

St. Stephens Day is celebrated in Ireland on December 26th. St. Stephens Day honors the first Christian martyr after the crucifixion. St. Stephens Day is an National Holiday in Ireland that has survived and is very much part of Christmas.

IS PLUM PUDDING THE SAME AS CHRISTMAS PUDDING?

The traditional Irish Christmas Pudding or Plum pudding are the same. Plum pudding also know as Christmas Pudding was originally a porridge flavored with scraps of meat or fish, thickened with bread crumbs and bound together with eggs, fruit and spices. During the Tudor and Stuart period dried prunes were added to the pudding which became known as plum porridge.

CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS

The placing of a ring of Holly on doors originated in Ireland as Holly was one of the main plants that flourished at Christmas time and which gave the poor ample means with which to decorate their dwellings. All decorations are traditionally taken down on Little Christmas (January 6th.) and it is considered to be bad luck to take them down beforehand.

WHAT IS WOMEN”S CHRISTMAS?

Women’s Christmas In Ireland IS on January 6, the Feast of the Epiphany, it is when traditionally the Irish finish celebrating Christmas. In Gaelic it is Nollaigh na mBean in Irish (Women’s Christmas). Tradition has it that women get the day off and the men do the housework, cooking and take down the Christmas decorations. Women meet up  to have a day out and treat themselves.

TRADITIONAL GAELIC CHRISTMAS GREETING

The Gaelic greeting for ‘Merry Christmas’ is: ‘Nollaig Shona Duit’
……which is pronounced as ‘null-ig hun-a dit’ and means HAPPY CHRISTMAS!

Irish Traditions, St. Patricks Day

Saint Patrick’s Day – Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in NYC

Who was Saint Patrick?

Saint Patrick was a Christian missionary and is regarded as the patron saint of Ireland. St. Patrick lived from AD 373–493, and ministered in Northern Ireland from AD 433 until his death. Pious legend credits Patrick with banishing snakes from the island, though post-glacial Ireland never actually had snakes. It is suggestion is that snakes referred to the serpent symbolism of the Druids. Saint Patrick is also credited with teaching the Irish about the Holy Trinity by showing people the shamrock and a three-leaved clover. Legend also says St. Patrick, while preaching Christianity, drew a cross through a Celtic circle symbolic of the moon Goddess. Hence the Celtic cross was born. Today the circle of the cross is viewed as a of God’s endless love.

Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in NYC

NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Irish-American immigrants brought Saint Patrick’s Day to the United States. The first civic and public celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day took place in Boston, Massachusetts in 1737. The first celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day in New York City was held at the Crown and Thistle Tavern in 1756. Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated by Irish and non-Irish alike. Regardless of ethnic background, everyone wears green-colored clothing and items. Traditionally, those who are caught not wearing green are pinched. The NYC St. Patrick’s Day parade has become the largest Saint Patrick’s Day parade in the world, outside Ireland. In 2006 more than 150,000 marchers participated in it, including Irish bands, Irish firefighters, Irish military and Irish police groups, county associations, Irish emigrant societies, Emerald Societies, and social and Irish cultural clubs, and it was watched by close to two million spectators lining the streets.

An Irish Blessing for Saint Patrick’s Day

May the leprechauns be near you,
To spread luck along your way.
And may all the Irish angels,
Smile upon you on St. Patrick’s Day.

There is an old Irish Blessing

For each petal on the shamrock this brings a wish your way. Good health, good luck, and happiness for today and every day.
